Everything You Need to Know About PlayStation Vue

The PlayStation used to just be a cool gaming system. Later evolutions allowed for Blu-Rays to be played and movies to be rented. Now you can use your PS3 or PS4 to view your favorite TV shows. Sony's Vue service has shows like Scandal, Better Call Saul and Penny Dreadful available to stream. If you're used to Hulu With Live TV, Sling TV or DirecTV Now, you'll know what to expect from Sony's latest creation. These services allow you to live without cable while still offering a great range of shows. Vue also has a few great features that distinguish it from its rivals.

Features

With Vue you can use the My Shows function to store your favorite shows in the cloud for 28 days so you'll never miss shows that stream at the same time as something else you're into. Explore is another great function. It allows you to search for content using genre, rating and length filters. More basic functions like Favorite Channel are there so you know where to go for all your favorite shows and movies. Timeline is another neat feature that tracks your favorite content. This feature creates a personalized recommendation list on your home screen.

Now you've convinced yourself to get PlayStation Vue let's see if it can be worked into your monthly budget. The basic package called Access is $44.99 per month. For that you get 48 channels including FX, SyFy, ABC and CBS. You also get Cartoon Network and Disney Channel for the kids, and ESPN and ESPN 2 for the sports addict in the family. The Core plan is five dollars more but you get 66 channels including the NFL Network. The Elite plan is the third option. For $59.99 a month you get 89 channels including NatGeo and MGM. The Ultra plan has 90 channels including Showtime and HBO but it costs $79.99 per month.

Bandwidth

If you want the best experience, you'll need 10Mbps or higher while streaming on Vue. Since that's the bandwidth recommended for PlayStation there's every chance that you'll already have that. If you want to stream another show at the same time, you'll need 15Mbps as an additional 5Mbps is needed for every device using the service simultaneously. Since a single Vue account is limited to five devices at one time, the most you'll need is 30Mbps if you want to use five devices at one time.

Premium Channels

Vue, which is available in all 50 states, offers many local channels so you can keep up with sport in your area or view the weather forecast. The four packages we've outlined already give you a taste of what's available but you can bolt on HBO for $15 a month or add Showtime for $10 if you're not going to take the Ultra package, while Cinemax is a further $15. Sports fans can add Fox Soccer Plus for $12.99 but you should take the Core package if you're really into sport as that comes with the NFL Network, ESPN, ESPN2 and NBC Golf.

What Else Do I Need to Know?

When you're out of the house you can watch Vue on Android, iOS devices and Amazon Fire. You can also watch through Chromecast as well as any PlayStation 3 or PS4 device, but there's no option to watch through Nintendo Switch or Xbox machines at this time. At the moment there are no parental controls with Vue but the Explorer feature allows you to limit the home screen content to the rating you're comfortable with. When compared with a rival like Sling, you'll find that it offers more content but its starting price is a little higher. Neither Hulu With Live TV or YouTube TV offer as many simultaneous streams but both have less limitation when using the DVR function.
